I have always absolutely ADORED animation.

However, I never thought it to be between my reach. How could I even get into it? Where would I study it? What professional outcomes would this path even have?

When you think about it, it is quite a complex concept to get a grasp: you basically create a new reality from scratch. You do not film somebody doing a simple action, but instead draw the person with all their moving parts separately on your program of choice, then move it into your animation program of choice and tinker with several settings, until your subject does not look like an assortment of random wiggling limbs!

Anyway, I am getting ahead of myself!

Six months ago, I gained access to the Adobe Creative Cloud and a drawing tablet. I started learning about layers, blending tools and more on photoshop. After a few weeks, I realized that still image was not going to be enough for me and then discovered, Premiere and started editing videos.

However, real people are not quite as entertaining as cartoons and slowly, but surely – I made my way to After Effects.

So here is the advice that I can offer to you *royalty free corporate inspirational music buildup*:

Start as soon as you can! You are not bad at art; you just have never practiced for long enough. If you are serious about this, you will draw after work, weekends, and during a percentage of your free time. It works the same for still image, video editing and animation: you just need to start. Get past the blank paper fear and do it.

In terms of learning, there are so many tutorials on YouTube that you can follow. It is difficult to tell the good ones from the bad ones but you can always do some research as there are some very good channels for learning and also entertainment.

Now, you will learn about a lot of different options and open discussions about what is best online. In my opinion, Adobe CC is your best bet since every single company out there uses is. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but it is a professional toolset, therefore will be used by professional companies. By all means join the discussions and make your own choices, but sooner or later you will have to learn Adobe CC if you want to go pro.

That’s it from me, pick up the pen, let your imagination fly, and get drawing!

Good luck,

Anna!
