Champions of Sustainable Events: Why is it important to consider sustainability in events?

As an industry, we cross so many borders in terms of the clients we deal with. We are the perfect industry to drive change in sustainability because we can implement it in so many other industries. That’s why we have kick-started Champions of Sustainable Events!

What’s more: sustainability can be implemented in events through thorough planning, it doesn’t necessarily have to incur a cost.


Ways in which we try to reduce the impact and help clients:

ISO 20121, the International Standard on Sustainable Event Management was developed to help the event industry put sustainability first when planning and staging events. Based on the British Standard BS 8901 (Specification for a sustainability management system for events), ISO 20121 enables event organisers and businesses to identify the potential impacts of an event, how to reduce any negative impacts on the environment, communities and local economy, and leave a positive legacy.

Today, we are concerned with environmental issues more than ever. Air pollution, plastic in oceans, global warming, and food waste — all are among the major threats, making us worry and think of being kinder to the planet. In support of environmental health, millions have joined Lifestyles Of Health And Sustainability, heavily purchasing socially responsible products – despite their higher cost.

Champions of Sustainable Events are a group of industry professionals who have given their time to purchase checklists, blogs, podcasts and product information to help and give advice for clients and event professionals to become where possible more eco-friendly and sustainable.

We have secured regular publication in Conference News for our efforts in improving sustainability within the events industry.

Our latest publication in Conference News Magazine, ‘Food Savers’ talks about food surplus within the events industry, in particular, food surplus in conferences and how we can tackle this.

We look at how we can use Food Banks to improve food waste in the events industry and how we overcame issues with trying to give excess food to food banks.
