Conference News: Food Savers

OLIO is a food sharing application that aims to reduce food waste on a global scale! This includes food nearing its sell-by date, leftover food from events, home-grown foods and more.
By using an application that allows you to both view and list items, it connects local businesses, organisations, the public and more together, so that surplus food can be shared.
To list an item, it works just like any e-commerce application such as eBay and Amazon. You simply add photos, a description of the item and then add a location and time for the item to be available for pick-up. To view items, simply browse the items available near you, request them and then arrange your pick-up by messaging the owner.
Food waste is a huge issue in the events industry that is often looked over.
When planning larger events such as conferences, getting a 100%-accurate number of delegates can be difficult. Some guests are 50/50 about attending, some don’t notify the organiser that they are cancelling and more.
This results in an over-estimation of numbers, which often results in food waste.
That’s where OLIO comes in: this application can, at a minimum, dramatically reduce the waste at your event by organising someone to collect the excess food & drinks to be used elsewhere.
We recently gained coverage in Conference News Magazine for looking at how to “tackle the huge mountain of food waste in our industry”
OLIO can be used to reduce food waste at any event, as any excess food can be re-distributed from your event! We see OLIO as part of the solution to the food waste issue in the events industry.
In the article, we talk about how we worked with local food banks for the Xero conference we organised in an effort to reduce our food waste at that event.
We discuss the issues we have with giving food banks food that they can accept.

As you probably already know, the Events Industry produces a lot of food excess and catering waste. Firstly, we often have to cater for hundreds of guests. This leaves us with a huge food excess that will most likely not be consumed.
