How Do You Plan and Prepare for Draping for Events?
Careful planning ensures draping is safe, functional, and visually appealing for any draping for events.
What Are Functional Tips for Effective Draping for Events?
Draping serves practical purposes as well as decorative ones, enhancing both guest experience and event logistics in draping for events.
- Define Spaces: Use draping to define different areas within the event space. For this Tokyo-themed event, we used draping over the entrance tunnel to create a dark and impactful space! You can even add lights to the drapes for an illuminating effect.
- Conceal Unattractive Elements: hide unsightly walls, pillars, or other structural elements with draping to create a more cohesive and aesthetically pleasing environment.
- Acoustic Enhancement: Opt for drapes with sound-absorbing properties to improve acoustics in the space, especially in large or open venues. This will greatly enhance your music and entertainment.
- Lighting Integration: Choose drapes that allow for the integration of lighting elements. This can enhance the overall atmosphere and mood of the event. We recommend playing with semi-transparent materials and textures, for example, using crocheted drapes or cut-out shapes to flood your space with patterns!
- Temperature Control: Consider the functional aspect of draping for temperature control. Heavy drapes can help insulate the space, while sheer drapes allow for better ventilation.

What Are the Logistical Considerations for Draping for Events?
Logistics are key to safe, efficient, and reusable draping solutions for draping for events.
- Material Selection: Choose flame-retardant materials to comply with safety regulations and ensure the well-being of attendees.
- Easy Installation and Removal: Opt for drapes that are easy to install and dismantle to streamline the setup and teardown process.
- Customisation: Invest in drapes that can be easily customised in terms of length, colour, and texture to match different event themes and styles.
- Durable Fabrics: Choose durable fabrics that can withstand handling, folding, and potential wear and tear during multiple uses.
How Can Draping Enhance Theming in Events?
Draping is a core tool in creating themed atmospheres, immersive experiences, and branded spaces in draping for events.
- Colour Coordination: Select drapes that complement or match the overall colour scheme of the event. This can contribute to a cohesive and visually appealing design. If you want something to stand out, consider clashing patterns or bold statement drapes on top of more subdued ones.
- Themed Backdrops: Create themed backdrops using draping to enhance the overall ambience. This can be especially effective for photo booths or stage setups.
- Layering Effects: Carefully layer drapes of different lengths, colours and textures to create depth and dimension within the event space. We love using various transparencies to highlight this.
- Personalised Branding: Incorporate branding elements, logos, or event graphics onto drapes to reinforce the event’s identity and message. One of our personal favourites is using 3D projection logos on top of drapes to efficiently and effectively unify your space!
- Transition Zones: Use draping strategically in transition zones to guide attendees from one area to another, creating a sense of flow and continuity.
Remember, the key to successful draping is thoughtful planning and consideration of both the functional needs of the event and the desired thematic elements. Learn how to implement this below, or contact us today and let us do it for you.
What Equipment Is Needed for Draping for Events?
Successful draping for events relies on the right equipment to ensure stability, safety, and aesthetics.
Required Equipment
You’ll need some equipment and materials in place, which can have a high upfront cost, such as the rigging and fabric.
- Rigging, stands, and frames to hold drapes securely
- Hooks, Velcro strips, and clamps for installation
- Draping material selected for colour, texture, and length
- Accurate venue measurements for precision fitting
- Optional lighting or projection elements integrated with fabric
Venue Permission
Before starting with any wall draping or draping a ceiling, make sure you have permission from the venue, with any restrictions absolutely clear.
Considering this, not every surface of the venue will need to be covered – you can also use the existing venue style to work into your event design if you wish.
For example, see how we used this venue’s existing appearance to maximise the event design for the gala dinner we organised in Venice. Because the venue had some beautiful walls, we used them to enhance the draping and vice versa:

Choosing a Drape Colour
When choosing the colour of your drapes, always make sure it complements the overall theme or style you are going for.
Neutral colours usually work best; however, you may want to consider contrasting colours if you want certain aspects to stand out/complement the theme/style you are going for.
Having more than one colour can also be a good option if you want to introduce more variety into your event space – for example, this is what we did for a black-and-white-themed event for this custom installation:

It is essential for the draping to match your overall event design and complement it.

Draping For Events – Types Explained
We’ll now go over the three main draping for events options below in more detail with some examples.
Wall Draping
Wall draping is the most popular option for venue dressing, and that’s because it’s one of the most visible aspects of your event space.
Your eyes are naturally drawn to the ‘boundaries’ of your event space – so guests will naturally look at the walls when they enter your event space.
So you want the walls to blend in with your event space – not stand out like a sore thumb!
Clever wall draping techniques will do just this – it will integrate the walls seamlessly into the rest of your event props and styling.

Ceiling Draping
Ceiling draping often matches the wall drapes and again is used to cover up unsightly surfaces in an event space. Draping a ceiling may seem a little more complex than wall draping due to the angle.
Here’s the ceiling draping we did for a private party:

You can see how we’ve used a subtle black colour to offset the bright lights we decorated the drapes with – it’s a simple but effective way of filling the space.
Pipe and Drape
Pipe and drape are an essential method of splitting up your event space – they are effectively walls you can create in an event space to create multiple zones/rooms in one space.
For example, we used pipe and drape for the Sidemen Charity Match 2022 after-party to create several seating areas, a photo backdrop and more to split up the event space:

Again, all this requires is some rigging and stands to hang the draping materials over – and it makes for a complete event space.
How Does Draping Look When Fully Integrated?
Combining wall, ceiling, and pipe draping creates a cohesive, visually immersive event space, showcasing the full potential of draping for events.
So what can your event space look like when all of these aspects are put together?
Take a look at this video of a recent themed event we did for a corporate client – this will give you a fantastic idea (and some inspiration) for what your event space can look like (skip to 1:11):
Fully integrated draping for events will look like:
- Walls seamlessly integrate with décor
- Ceilings soften harsh lines and highlight features
- Pipe and drape zones divide the space into functional areas
- Drapes work with lighting, props, and furniture for total transformation
- Photo-ready setups and immersive areas for guest interaction
